While up at the bar I talked to 2 riders who said they had gone down to Big
Springs today. This was our destination, so I asked how it was. They advised
trail 41 was great on the way down but not to take trail 7 as it had not been
touched by the clubs and was bad. They stated there was a small water hole
south of where 413 meets tail 7 north of Big Springs. I asked how big and
they said, “as wide as the trial, 10 feet long but only 8 inches deep.” MORE
ON THAT LATER.
Saturday morning, we woke to several inches of fresh snow. At breakfast we
talked about the ride, the destination, and that we had the same ride lead-
ers. We all split up and headed out, with Sally jumping into my group. Chuck
Comstock and Dennis Winowiecki had decided not to ride. Lenny’s group
went first, followed by Russ, then my group, and then Dave’s off/on trail
group took off last.
Trail 7 and 8 were excellent into Shingleton and we headed south on 41. As
we passed the Boot Lake Bar cut off Russ’s group was taking a break. We
continued and stopped for a break just past Steuben. We continued past the
Jack Pine Bar and onto trail 413. The trail was nice and soon it met up with
trail 7. We went about a mile south on 7, when John Koss stopped me on the
trail. Peggy Mariucci’s sled had fallen into the water hole which was still as
wide as the trail, but 15-20 feet long and 2-3 feet deep. Shakedown ride!
