While driving through Marquette, Rich saw the Wal-Mart store, and it
was still open. I was surprised they even had snowmobile boots. My
choice of two boots, were a pair of Arctic Cat boots which were too
big. My other choice was a no brand pair, and boy were they cheap
boots. I knew my feet were going to freeze in these, they had little in-
sulation. Oh well better than nothing, I will just have to wear three
pairs of socks.
After leaving Marquette and not having to worry about boots, my dash
lights went out causing my tail lamps to go out as well. I kept driving
until we reached Ishpeming, then we had to stop because it was
getting dark. I replaced the fuse and when I started my truck, the fuse
blew again, so I pulled on the trailer wiring and moved it around, re-
placed the fuse, and we have lights. We pulled into Baraga around 8:00
pm, with trailer lights, and checked in at the Ojibwa Casino. We un-
loaded both sleds and drove down to pick up the rental sled for Rich’s
son Jason. What a long day!!!!
Next morning, we left the casino around 8:00 am and headed towards
Houghton/Hancock Michigan where we would spend two nights. The
morning was brisk, but the sun was shining, and the trails were
smooth. Once we rode outside of the city, the wind died down from
the woods and my new Yamaha Vmax 600 triple was running great.
Ray was riding a Polaris X 800, while Maria was on a Ski-doo 600, and
both Rich and his son were riding Ski-doo 500’s. the morning turned
into a wonderful day with moderate temp’s and no cold feet so far. We
stopped for lunch, then headed for our motel, since we arrived some
what early, Ray took us on a 30-mile loop before calling it a night.
The next morning, again sunshine and moderate temperatures again.
Our destination for the day was Copper Harbor, then ride the other of
the Keweenaw back to Houghton. Once we arrived at Copper Harbor
the temperature was around 50 degrees, setting record highs for the
day. There was so much snow in the area, it did not matter. The trails
held up great, and my boots were loving the warm temps. I believe we
rode well over 100 miles each day. (I do not remember)
